The Bible And Ice Ages

Biblegems #225
Question: How does the biblical scenario of a young earth / universe deal with scientific data showing the earth has experienced 5 major Ice Ages, including our current time Quaternary Ice Age beginning 2 1/2 million years ago?

According to the Bible, glaciers would have followed the worldwide Flood of Noah’s day, around 4,500 years ago. Because the Flood was due in large part to the eruption of super-heated water from beneath the earth’s crust, in addition to torrential rainfall, the floodwaters would have been very warm.
Gen. 7:11-12  In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.  And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

Current scientific models depicting multiple Ice Ages (extending back in time millions of years) are based upon assumptions, not observable, measurable scientific fact. The most critical assumption is that the relation between temperature and precipitation has remained relatively constant throughout earth’s history. Consequently, the past is measured by what can only be observed in the present.

Not only is such an assumption un-provable, there is much evidence to contradict it.[i] Consider the glacier evidence at the Yosemite National park, for example. The evidence shows that glaciers once covered the Yosemite valley to a depth of 3,00 feet. Recent computer simulations demonstrate that “Glaciers thousands of feet thick could have readily developed in hundreds of years following the Genesis Flood.”[ii]

The book of Job, likely the most ancient book of the Bible, contains recorded memories of the Ice Age following the Flood:
Job 38:29 From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen?

Likewise, a man named Peleg (translated: “division”), one of Noah’s great-great grandsons, is noted in biblical history as from the generation that witnessed the conclusion of the post-Flood Ice Age:
Gen. 10:25 Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided

This “division” of the earth recalls a significant geological event, probably the recession of the vast ice sheets, and the rising sea levels caused by the melting ice, that “divided” the global landscape into the continents, as we now know them.

Scientifically, millions of years—even hundreds of thousands of years—are not required to create the multiple ice layers scientists point to as evidence of Ice Ages in the pre-human past. On the contrary, the rocks cry out in harmony with written testimony from eyewitnesses that a great Ice Age covered much of the earth following Noah’s Flood. This created land routes over which Noah’s descendants could populate the earth. As the Ice Age ended, people groups were left stranded on the seven continents.

The evidence is there for all to see, but people who trust scientists more than God’s Word “deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed” (2Pet. 3:5b-6).

How Old Is The Bible?

Biblegems #165
Question: Since Genesis is the first book of the Bible and records the creation of the earth, does that also make it the oldest book of the Bible?

Actually, Genesis is not the oldest book of the Bible. Moses compiled the first five books of the Bible around 1400 B.C. The events in Genesis alone cover the roughly 4,300 years—from creation to the death of Abraham’s son, Joseph, in Egypt. Earth’s early history would have been handed down from Adam and Eve, who lived nearly a thousand years, to their descendants.

Older than the book of Moses by perhaps as much as 700 years is the book of Job. Job was a real person, as testified by the Lord God Himself:
Ezek. 14:20 …as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, even if Noah, Daniel and Job were in it, they could save neither son nor daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness.

James, the Lord’s brother and first leader of the Jerusalem Church, also refers to Job as an historical person:
James 5:11 As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

He lived in the region in Arabia called Uz, named after one of Adam’s great-grandsons (Gen. 10:23). Evidence from the book of Job itself indicates that he lived around the time of Abraham, just a few centuries after the Flood. Both he and his friends reminded each other of the Flood as God’s judgment upon mankind as if it were a relatively recent event in history (Job 12:15; 22:15-16; 26:10; 38:8, 11).

Job also lived at such an early stage of history that he saw dinosaurs, which he called “behemoth” (Job 40:15-23). He also interacted with (and was abused by) what appear to be Neanderthal tribes. They are described as those who lived in the wastelands, and who had a staggered way of walking that made them look as if they were drunk (Job 12:24-25). They were treated as outcasts and “…were forced to live in the dry stream beds, among the rocks and in holes in the ground. They brayed among the bushes and huddled in the undergrowth. A base and nameless brood, they were driven out of the land” (Job 30:6-8).

Job, probably written somewhere around 2100-2000 B.C., is the Bible’s oldest book, dating back a few hundred years after the great Flood. The most recent book of the Bible is Revelation, written around 95 A.D. That means the Bible is over 4,000 years old from the time the first book, Job, was composed. The book of Genesis, composed much later, contains material dating all the way back to Adam, to the dawn of human history and creation itself.

What a treasure! We have eyewitness accounts going back to the first humans, a trustworthy history that describes not only our origins but also God’s very plan and purpose for the human race!
Ps. 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

A Young Earth & Diamonds

Biblegems #30
One Biblegems reader wants to know how, in a young earth scenario, diamonds are formed?

According to typical modern scientific theory, natural diamonds were formed millions—even billions—of years ago. The theory goes that deposits of pure carbon trapped deep in the earth’s mantle, under tremendous pressures and intense temperatures (1100 - 2900° C), eventually crystallized. Over millions and billions of years, these crystals gradually moved upwards through the earth’s crust, carried along by volcanic magma.

A standard scientific technique for determining the age of diamonds is applying the decay rate of Carbon 14 within them. Unfortunately for the popular scientific theory, carbon 14 is undetectable after 100,000 years, assuming the rate of decay remains constant. Yet carbon 14 is evident in diamonds, indicating that diamonds are only thousands of years old instead of millions.

Recent scientific studies by Andrew Snelling and Mark Armitage have also indicated that some structural formations peculiar to diamonds are likely due to water-born uranium 238. “It appears that Armitage's observations of etch trails, darkened linear features, and twisted tubes are remnants of fluid infiltration when the hot diamonds were in contact with hydrothermal fluids near the surface of the earth.”1 For this to have occured, the process would have only required hours and weeks, not billions, millions or even thousands of years. It all could have taken place in the early days of creation.

The Bible plainly states that …
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters (Gen. 1:1-2).

That primordial earth, the hard material of dirt and rock, was completely submersed in water. On the second “day” (Hebrew: yom, a literal 24 hour time period) of creation the waters were separated and the dry land appeared. On that same day vegetation burst forth from the ground at a super-accelerated rate that would have appeared much like our elapsed time digital productions of blossoming flowers or changing seasons. This would have provided the perfect environment for the rapid formation of diamonds.

While the Bible is not a scientific treatise, it does frequently address scientific issues and makes claims regarding the nature of the natural universe, its origins and its purpose. When these claims are made as statements of fact and not poetic metaphor, they need to be taken as fact. We cannot hold the Bible to be the true revelation of God on the one hand, and then alter its plain meaning to fit the theories of the day on the other.

The very existence of diamonds is a testimony in the earth of God’s creation as revealed in the Scriptures. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse (Rom. 1:20).
